Facts About Peripheral Neuropathy

If you experience a pins-and-needles feeling, a burning sensation, numbness, and tingling, especially in the feet, you may have a condition known as peripheral neuropathy. This is the result of nerve damage that affects the extremities, and is common to diabetics as the result of high blood sugar levels. The risk of peripheral neuropathy increases if you are more than 40 years old, smoke, and drink large amounts of alcohol. A number of other underlying factors can contribute to peripheral neuropathy. Among them are low levels of vitamin B12, underactive thyroid, chronic liver or kidney disease, and inflammation of blood vessels. There is no known cure for peripheral neuropathy, but a number of treatments are available to treat it or lessen its effects. If you believe you may have peripheral neuropathy that affects your feet, it is suggested that you visit a podiatrist to determine the cause and get suggestions for a course of treatment.

Neuropathy

Neuropathy can be a potentially serious condition, especially if it is left undiagnosed. If you have any concerns that you may be experiencing nerve loss in your feet, consult with Dr. Ronald K. Olm from Grand Traverse Foot & Ankle Center. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment for neuropathy.

What Is Neuropathy?

Neuropathy is a condition that leads to damage to the nerves in the body. Peripheral neuropathy, or neuropathy that affects your peripheral nervous system, usually occurs in the feet. Neuropathy can be triggered by a number of different causes. Such causes include diabetes, infections, cancers, disorders, and toxic substances.

Symptoms of Neuropathy Include:

  • Numbness
  • Sensation loss
  • Prickling and tingling sensations
  • Throbbing, freezing, burning pains
  • Muscle weakness

Those with diabetes are at serious risk due to being unable to feel an ulcer on their feet. Diabetics usually also suffer from poor blood circulation. This can lead to the wound not healing, infections occurring, and the limb may have to be amputated.

Treatment

To treat neuropathy in the foot, podiatrists will first diagnose the cause of the neuropathy. Figuring out the underlying cause of the neuropathy will allow the podiatrist to prescribe the best treatment, whether it be caused by diabetes, toxic substance exposure, infection, etc. If the nerve has not died, then it’s possible that sensation may be able to return to the foot.

Pain medication may be issued for pain. Electrical nerve stimulation can be used to stimulate nerves. If the neuropathy is caused from pressure on the nerves, then surgery may be necessary.

Tendons in the Ankle That Can Cause Pain

Tendons are tissues that connect bones to muscles. Two such tendons, the peroneal tendons and the posterior tibial tendons begin in the leg and travel down at the rear of the ankle before attaching to bones in the foot. They are instrumental in facilitating certain movements of the ankle and foot. They can also be responsible for causing ankle pain. The posterior tibial tendon connects the muscle in the back of the shin bone to the bones in the foot. This tendon can become injured due to overuse or trauma and cause pain that is felt on the inside of the ankle. The peroneal tendons connect certain calf muscles to the foot. They can become inflamed at the ankle joint behind the fibula bone due to trauma or overuse and cause swelling and tenderness, along with pain behind the ankle. Any kind of ankle pain should prompt a visit to the podiatrist for diagnosis and treatment.

Ankle pain can have many different causes and the pain may potentially be serious. If you have ankle pain, consult with Dr. Ronald K. Olm from Grand Traverse Foot & Ankle Center. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Ankle pain is any condition that causes pain in the ankle. Due to the fact that the ankle consists of tendons, muscles, bones, and ligaments, ankle pain can come from a number of different conditions.

Causes

The most common causes of ankle pain include:

  • Types of arthritis (rheumatoid, osteoarthritis, and gout)
  • Ankle sprains
  • Broken ankles
  • Achilles tendinitis
  • Achilles tendon rupture
  • Stress fractures
  • Tarsal tunnel syndrome
  • Plantar fasciitis

Symptoms

Symptoms of ankle injury vary based upon the condition. Pain may include general pain and discomfort, swelling, aching, redness, bruising, burning or stabbing sensations, and/or loss of sensation.

Diagnosis

Due to the wide variety of potential causes of ankle pain, podiatrists will utilize a number of different methods to properly diagnose ankle pain. This can include asking for personal and family medical histories and of any recent injuries. Further diagnosis may include sensation tests, a physical examination, and potentially x-rays or other imaging tests.

Treatment

Just as the range of causes varies widely, so do treatments. Some more common treatments are rest, ice packs, keeping pressure off the foot, orthotics and braces, medication for inflammation and pain, and surgery.

All About Sesamoiditis

Sesamoiditis is an inflammation of two tiny bones under the big toe and the tendons they are wrapped in. Sesamoids help support your weight as it transfers to the ball of the foot when you run, dance and walk in high heels. These bones are embedded in tendons, and when they become irritated from overuse they cause inflammation, or tendonitis. Symptoms of sesamoiditis include pain under the big toe, difficulty bending the big toe, swelling, redness and sometimes bruising. Just walking can be painful. People with high arches or flat feet, who roll their foot inward when they walk, or who have gout are at risk for sesamoiditis. A podiatrist can examine your feet and test for mobility, as well as to rule out other causes of your condition, such as bone fracture or turf toe. Treatment may include steroid injections or, in chronic cases, surgery. Please consult a podiatrist for further information.

Sesamoiditis is an unpleasant foot condition characterized by pain in the balls of the feet. If you think you’re struggling with sesamoiditis, contact Dr. Ronald K. Olm of Grand Traverse Foot & Ankle Center. Our doctor will treat your condition thoroughly and effectively.

Sesamoiditis

Sesamoiditis is a condition of the foot that affects the ball of the foot. It is more common in younger people than it is in older people. It can also occur with people who have begun a new exercise program, since their bodies are adjusting to the new physical regimen. Pain may also be caused by the inflammation of tendons surrounding the bones. It is important to seek treatment in its early stages because if you ignore the pain, this condition can lead to more serious problems such as severe irritation and bone fractures.

Causes of Sesamoiditis

  • Sudden increase in activity
  • Increase in physically strenuous movement without a proper warm up or build up
  • Foot structure: those who have smaller, bonier feet or those with a high arch may be more susceptible

Treatment for sesamoiditis is non-invasive and simple. Doctors may recommend a strict rest period where the patient forgoes most physical activity. This will help give the patient time to heal their feet through limited activity. For serious cases, it is best to speak with your doctor to determine a treatment option that will help your specific needs.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact one of our offices located in Traverse City and Kalkaska, MI . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.

Common Causes of Foot Pain

Nearly half of adults in the United States have some type of foot pain. This is to be expected, as we are on our feet so much of the time in our day-to-day lives. Sometimes it’s as simple as wearing different shoes, or wearing the proper shoe for the activity you are doing. However, when pain is not only frequent, but also persistent, it’s a good idea to see a podiatrist for help. The main causes of reported foot pain are tarsal tunnel syndrome, arthritis, plantar fasciitis, ingrown toenails, bunions, and corns and calluses. Tarsal tunnel syndrome is caused by a pinched nerve that starts in the big toe. The pain then moves through the foot to the ankle and can advance into the lower leg. Arthritis is an inflammatory disease that affects the joints, many of which are in the foot and ankle. Plantar fasciitis is an overuse injury affecting a band of tissue on the sole of the foot, resulting in heel pain. An ingrown toenail occurs then the toenail grows into the skin, often the result of tight shoes or improper footcare. Bunions are a bone deformity, usually at the base of the big toe, that affects the gait and can cause other foot problems. Corns and calluses are areas of hardened skin that can become extremely painful as they rub against the inside of a shoe. A podiatrist is able to help with each of these conditions, examining your feet and offering appropriate treatment options.

Foot Pain

Foot pain can be extremely painful and debilitating. If you have a foot pain, consult with Dr. Ronald K. Olm from Grand Traverse Foot & Ankle Center. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

  • Ingrown Toenails
  • Arthritis (such as Gout, Rheumatoid, and Osteoarthritis)
  • Flat Feet
  • Injury (from stress fractures, broken toe, foot, ankle, Achilles tendon ruptures, and sprains)
  • And more

Diagnosis

To figure out the cause of foot pain, podiatrists utilize several different methods. This can range from simple visual inspections and sensation tests to X-rays and MRI scans. Prior medical history, family medical history, and any recent physical traumatic events will all be taken into consideration for a proper diagnosis.

Treatment

Treatment depends upon the cause of the foot pain. Whether it is resting, staying off the foot, or having surgery; podiatrists have a number of treatment options available for foot pain.
